Talks Since winning BBC Gardener of the Year, I have given talks to garden clubs all over the south west about the scenes that were deleted from the programme. Never mind about the gardening, I can reveal the secrets of Charlie Dimmock’s underwear drawer and whether or not Alan Titchmarsh dyes his hair……
I have also added the sequel about winning BBC Gardener of the Decade and have developed other talks such as Colour In The Garden, Plants That Should Be Better Known, and New Tricks For Old Gardeners.
Talks under construction include A Tour of Somerset Nurseries and Hardy Exotic Plants. I can also combine talks to suit the requirements of your garden club.
My fee for 2017 will be £110 plus return travel from Ilminster at 45p per mile. Please contact me for further details. For 2018 the fee will be £120 and 2019 it will be £130
Ready Steady Garden – Taunton Flower Show
After winning BBC Gardener of the Year in 1999 the chairman of Taunton Flower Show asked if I would build a show garden there. I declined, stating lack of time and money as an excuse.
Finally I relented in 2006 but said I could not possibly afford to build a show garden, not could I take a week off to do it, but if I could borrow a van load of plants from a garden centre, I could stage a garden in one day. It developed into a competition between me and another local designer, Sally Leaney – which I won.
Ever since then I have run this as Ready Steady Garden, a competition for similarly strapped gardeners, students and landscapers and I commentate as the gardens are being built. The two contestants have two hours to put together a garden from a large selection of plants and some accessories. It has proved to be very popular.

Instant Garden Challenge – Royal Bath and West Show, Shepton Mallet
Ready Steady Garden has been a real hit with the garden show crowds and in 2011 was first launched at the National Garden Show as Garden In A Day and was even more successful in 2012. Last spring I was asked to take it to the Chelsea Fringe – maybe next year! 2017 – we are no longer running Ready Steady Garden at Taunton Flower show but I will be giving talks in the lecture tent
Contact me if you would like to develop this for your garden show.
Judging at Flower Shows
I have judged at Taunton Flower Show and local shows, particularly the produce and show gardens. I always keep the motor running in case I need to make a rapid exit. Not yet being a qualified judge, I don’t judge at big shows. Nowadays I seldom have time, but it’s nice to get out sometimes!
